Pilates
Pilates is known for its flat belly /long and lean legs effect.
We can achieve this result because in PILATES we work on developing a stable and strong core (the deep abdominal muscles), called in Pilates language the POWERHOUSE, and on moving the peripheral limbs from this center outward.
But it is much more than this, and even if it is already worth doing just for these reasons at first ;), you’ll very quickly discover other benefits.
Pilates is an exercise method which has indeed different positive effects and purposes:
- It is a one hour focus on movement flow intertwined with breath which can refill you with energy.
- The type of BREATHING pattern we use greatly helps in fully oxygenating the body and making our lungs work to their utmost potential.
- Because it works on developing our whole body and all our muscles in a an harmonious and balanced way , you become GENERALLY MORE TONED.
- Because the practice of Pilates exercises give you bodily awareness and develop muscles in a balanced way, it improves your posture and everyday life movements : by learning to move better you can become more efficient and stronger in sport AND in any daily action!
- Pilates requires PRECISION, CONTROL and CONCENTRATION : when performed with the proper focuses and activations, Pilates can dramatically help you to deal with your everyday pains.
- It also increases flexibility and joint efficiency and is thus appropriate for dancers and sports people; a lot of athlete and world’s best dancers are doing Pilates!
- Last but not least , it can even have a positive effect on your sex life as it teaches you how to develop strong pelvic floor muscles…
PILATES is actually the name of the founder of the method, a German man who lived in the early part of the 20th century. As a child he was suffering of rheumatic fever, asthma an rickets and had a weak respiratory system. He started to study anatomy and movement to improve his condition. He did yoga, martial arts and kick boxing and finally developed his own exercise system which he called Contrology and is now known as PILATES.
This system includes mat and apparels exercises. It is now becoming very popular and over 10 million people practice it in the United States...
At Parinama and Devi Centers, PILATES is a combination of all the fundamentals of the method with a deeply somatic approach.
As a Balanced Body University Pilates teacher, a Body-Mind Centering Somatic Movement Educator and dancer , your teacher, Céline Louis, is mostly interested in helping you to feel yourself throughout your pilates practice.
For better results it is important to have an understanding of how the body is working and what are the objectives of the movement routine we do. This is why we will start the class experimenting some basic anatomical landmarks and/or principles which we will then use in the exercises. We will also use somatic principles to free our body from tensions and prepare it for an efficient practice. This is why our classes last 70 minutes instead of the traditional 60 minutes Pilates practice.
I believe that it is only through awareness of our patterns, be it of thinking, of breathing or of moving, and with an ability to focus that you can go on the path of PARINAMA ( transformation in Sanskrit) in whatever field of your life (physical, relational, or spiritual).
This awareness can also bring JOY to us: it has recently been proven that happiness is higher in any activity when people are focused on their embodied experience without having distracting thoughts.
You’re welcome to give it a try!!
